Hiking for your joints

Those suffering from pain often find it difficult to stay active and get outside. Yet exercise is the best way to prevent and counteract pain. It's important to gently place strain on the joints and keep warm in cool temperatures. Whether hiking, walking, or strolling: the gentle, rhythmic movements of running promote nutrient supply to the joints and build endurance and strength. They strengthen ligaments and muscles, which in turn protect the joints – if done correctly.

Starting with a lighter load and gradually increasing the difficulty gives your body time to adjust to the movement. The pace and route selection are crucial here. A perfect start: Walk at a moderate pace on soft ground without any extreme inclines. Your hiking boots should be sturdy and well-cushioned.

Hiking poles - useful companions

Hiking poles are a good companion for optimizing your movement and relieving pressure on your joints. On steeper terrain, it's better to take small steps; this makes your movements more stable and puts less pressure on your joints. Descents are the biggest challenge for bones and joints; they require the most strength. If your muscles are overworked and already fatigued, your joints have to absorb all the shocks. Therefore, adjust the length of your hike to your individual fitness level and start your downhill walks well in advance.

If you also want to do your joints good, you should drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet – ideally with fresh fruit and vegetables. This supports the body's own repair mechanisms that rebuild joint cartilage.

Additional protection for the joints

Cold is damaging to aching joints. Durable knee warmers can help: The warmth keeps muscles supple and joints flexible. The natural hollow fibers of angora hair retain heat directly against the body, providing optimal insulation.

For maximum freedom of movement while hiking, our stretchy knee warmers are knitted to shape on special machines. This eliminates annoying side seams and ensures a reliable fit even during exercise or sports.

Non-slip knee warmers are available, for example, in the color combination dark gray / black for women and men in sizes S to XL.

Tips for joint-friendly hiking:

  • walk evenly and elastically
  • Adjust the pace and length of the tour to your individual fitness level
  • start the descent in good time
  • Shorten steps on steeper terrain
  • Avoid extreme inclines
  • prefer soft soils
  • Wear sturdy, well-cushioned shoes and use hiking poles
  • In cool temperatures: keep joints flexible with non-slip knee warmers
